African American Art

African American art is a broad term that describes the visual arts of the African American community. He was influenced by many different cultural traditions, including those in Africa, Europe and America. Traditional African American art forms include basketry, pottery and wood carving to quilting and painting. Many slaves from Africa as skilled artisans. The first recorded African-American artists were actually slaves who worked as potters, blacksmiths, carpenters, quilters, weavers and goldsmiths.

With the passage of the Civil War, it was acceptable for African-American works created for display in museums, so that artists continually works produced for this purpose. These works generally followed the trend of European traditions and romantic classical landscapes and portraits. Since that time the most popular were: Edward Mitchell Bannister, Henry Ossawa Tanner and Edmonia Lewis. But the United States of America, African American art was discriminatory restrictions. But abroad, the works of African-Americans were much better preserved. In Europe, especially in Paris, these artists can express much more freedom in experimentation and education in terms of techniques, which extended the traditional Western art.
